Slate Floors
Slate Floors
Slate is a good, if comparatively expensive, choice for flooring in both a domestic and commercial environment. If professionally installed it is certainly one of the most pleasing floors esthetically and comes in a variety of designs, colors and textures – both rough and smooth.
Part of the high cost of slate is reflected in its durability and relative ease of maintenance if properly cared for. It is not an especially porous substance (hence it has often been used for ceiling tiles) and therefore does not stain easily. However, it is very important to realize that ticket floors require attention to make sure that regular cleanup remains effective. As tough as it is the surface is variable – generally rough finishes are less tricky but the uneven finish can lead to a gradual build up of stains and bacterium that can, over time, be unmanageable to remove. Slate is therefore often ‘sealed’ with some sort of sealer with the idea of preventing staining.
Applying a sealer is extremely recommended, but a combination of general use, walk in dirt (especially from shoes) and moving objects and furniture can cause surface scratching and abrasions that can leave the surface unprotected and it is hither that maculation can occur. The grout between the edges of the slating tiles is an extremely holey substance and can stain easily, also leading to an unsatisfactory finish.
When spotting and markings on a ticket floor become visible, it is possible that layer upon layer of dirt and bacteria will have built up, and at this stage you would be recommended to consult a professional slate floor cleaning company which will be capable to utilize modern technology and techniques to restore the slate to its original state. Once this build up occurs, regular cleansing techniques often cease to be effective and the floor may end up with a dull and unsatisfactory finish.
Once a floor has been cleaned and restored, it is important to take care of it. Doormats to remove the majority of dirt and grit off of shoes is a good start point, clean spillages immediately and take care when moving heavy objects.
